Illumination in Manuscripts

When studying illumination in manuscripts, there are differing opinions on what is actually considered to be an illuminated text. For a general definition, they are manuscripts decorated with gold or silver, brilliant colors, and elaborate designs of miniature pictures, initials, and other details on the margins or borders.

However, it is in the strictest terms that only manuscripts with gold and silver can be considered illuminated. It is with this strict approach that we will be looking at the process of illumination in this essay.
